Andrew Redward Makes it a 3-peat at Waimate 50 2019

9 December 2019

The Nankang-sponsored driver made his third successful trip down to the small Canterbury town, which has a rich tradition of motorsport; October’s event marked 60 years since the festival’s inception. The ‘Waimate 50’ was born in 1959 when the inaugural street race was held on the 31st of January that year.

Waimate’s wide streets, central location and adventurous council made it the perfect place to host the New Zealand Championship event. Thousands of people packed the Waimate streets looking for the best vantage points possible. The feature race was the ‘Waimate 50’ - 50 laps of the 1.3 mile circuit that navigates its way through the central business area of the small South Canterbury town. Many renowned drivers of the day featured in this race, most notably a young Bruce McLaren who would go on to win the first ever crown.

As drifting has blossomed amongst motorsport drivers and fans alike, it has inevitably been incorporated into the event - with an exciting twist. The North vs. South drift battle continues to attract New Zealand’s premier drifters, all keen to secure the annual bragging rights for their Island.
