In April this year, Kiwi drift phenom Mad Mike Whiddett announced a partnership with Italian supercar manufacturer Lamborghini.
He then immediately made public a plot between the luxury vehicle giant and his own MADLAB to strip and rebuild a 2019 Lamborghini Huracán as a one-of-a-kind drift supercar named SLAMBO.
Picked up from Lamborghini Auckland with 23km on the clock, the mint-condition coupé was delivered straight to the lab at Hampton Downs for a series of hot laps and tests to determine just how the 5.2-litre V10, rear wheel drive supercar would hold up to Mike’s demanding driving.
He soon confirmed via social media that, in Corsa mode with all assists off, he could in fact get the Huracán to go sideways; describing the untouched version as “a masterpiece on track”.
However, despite this exceptional initial review, Mike and his team, in collaboration with multiple local aftermarket companies, spent the next 4 weeks hurriedly stripping the vehicle and retrofitting it with a dream assortment of top-of-the-line motorsport weaponry.
Of course, in a build which demanded the highest quality products across the board, Mike chose to fit his custom wheels with Nitto INVOs. Finally deciding on a staggered fitment of 235/35R19 in the front and 295/35R20 in the rear.
The astounding build, which includes a custom widebody kit from legendary Japanese tuning house Liberty Walk, is set to be released on track next month at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Regarded as “The world’s greatest celebration of motorsport and car culture”, the four-day event began in 1993 when the current Duke of Richmond, Charles Gordon-Lennox, decided to bring racing back to Goodwood House – his family estate, already steeped in British Motorsport history.
This year’s event will include a new section referred to as “The Arena” which will showcase drifting stunts and displays – a sign of the growing demand for drifting in motorsport. Mike’s global profile is huge within the sport and the street legal SLAMBO is bound to generate plenty of additional hype. A build series filmed by Red Bull will be available via Mike’s social media channels this month.
